The Clarenbridge Oyster Festival

If it is a plate of oysters you want and a few pints of guinness, then get down to a small village outside Galway City called Clarenbridge. Usually at the start of September every year, Clarenbridge hosts its famous Clarenbridge Oyster Festival, which is a great weekend of music and seafood, washed down with a few white collared pints of stout. The crowds usually increase year by year and the tents and set up is top class. Music and dance would play into the night while people would be singing and dancing, chatting and eating into the early hours of the next day. This years Clarenbridge oyster festival will be from September 3rd to the 5th.

The festival is almost fifty years old. Clarenbridge had its first festival way back in 1954 when 35 people arrived to taste the beautiful oyster with a squeeze of lemon and a sip of guinness. It is now one of Ireland’s leading social events, where people not only want to party, but socialise and laugh and dance and get to know one another. Although it retains its Galway roots, It has become more international in the last decade with people coming from every corner of the globe, like Scotland, England, Germany, Denmark, France,
America, Australia and Canada.

During the festival week, crowds of up to 10,000 people will visit the festival, a rather large plate of over 30,000 oysters will be enjoyed and not to mention the couple of hundred barrells of Guinness consumed. One of the founding members of the Clarenbridge Oyster festival was the late Patrick Burke, owner of the famous Clarenbridge pub, the Oyster Inn, which still carries his name over the door. He pushed and promoted the festival for years and now his efforts have paid off and Clarenbridge is now the place to go on the first week of September for some good company and to enjoy the fruits of the Atlantic Ocean.
