The Galway Races

Galway Races began in Ballybritt in the year 1869. Capt. Wilson Lynch of Renmore donated the land at Ballybrit free of charge, which was laid out to form a fine one and a half mile racetrack. On its first race meeting, almost 39,000 people turned up to see the racing. Eyre Square ended up being used as a campsite for the massive crowds that it did not think would turn out. The man in charge of starting this fabulous event was Lord St. Lawrence who also created Punchestown.

The Railway Company agreed to transport all the horses to Galway for the event, which was a great incentive to entrants. It was only a 2 days racing event back then. From the start the Galway Races has always attracted the best steeplechasing bloodstock in the world.

In 1971 the Galway Races was extended to a 4 -day event, which was increased to 5 days in 1974 when Friday racing was introduced. Since 1999, it now is a 7 -day festival with the addition of Saturday and Sunday. The tributes paid to Lord St. Lawrence for starting such an event have been well earned and well founded.
