History Of Galway 2

The people of Galway were always close with the people of Claddagh, situated nearby. Claddagh was a fishing village that provided Galway with the seafood that helped Galway become a massive economical power house. The Norman families accumulated so much wealth, that they not only dominated the current affairs of Galway and its environs, they were also given control over the ecclesiastical affairs of the city.

For almost 250 years, they had complete control of Galway City. The 14 Tribes of Galway are listed as: Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, DArcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyes, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris and Skerrett.

They swore allegiance to the Catholic church, and they were classed as English nobility and were very loyal to the King. What they also tried to do was to create a so called exclusive club between themselves and for example they would not marry outside of their tightly knit group.

England and its King were content with the Galway and its tribesmen because of their loyalty and so Galway was given its own autonomy and allowed to flourish without restricitons on trade and Galway was a great place to live with great security and no interference from England like other parts of Ireland. The merchant families continued trading with foreign countries, and especially with the Gironde region of France, and markets in the West Indies. Galway names like Lynch can be found in Bordeaux as well as Barbados.
