This part of Galway was part of the City’s medieval bastion
and was built around 1585. This arch was used as a lookout area
for undesirable buccaneer ships that would be passing the area.
Spanish Arch is made of two arches with the front part of the Arch
belonged to the old 18th Century fishmarket area, where the fishermens
wives from the Claddagh area would sell their freshly caught Atlantic
Ocean fish.
Richard DeBurgh’s castle was positioned around the Spanish
Arch area, at the end of what is now called Courthouse lane, beside
where the Druid Lane Theatre is located. These laneways are the
oldest in Galway City. Richard brought Welsh, Flemish, English and
French soldiers with him and they all settled here.
St Niholas' Church was constructed in 1320 by the Lynch family.
The Chruch houses carvings and other items from the 14th Century.
Christopher Colombus prayed in the church during his stay in 1477.
Lynch’s Castle, which dates back to 1320 is now a modern bank.
The area is now home to many pubs and restaurants. A fine example
of Galway’s ability to mix the old with the new.
