The fun and excitement at the Galway Races is electric and with
all the fantastic racing, the oyster bars, champagne and beer tents,
jazz bands, competitions as well as a best dressed lady competition
on Thursdays, have turned this week into one of the busiest and
most exciting weeks in the Summer time in Ireland. Everybody wants
to be there, the politicians, the businessmen, the hard-core gambler,
the socialite, the small rural farmer, they all mix together and
enjoy the so-called Irish Craic and excitement of the week. Win
or lose, most people who visit the Galway Races go home smiling
after having one of the best weeks of their lives. It is a must
for anyone who loves life and all that it brings.
Hail, rain or snow, the crowd usually are undaunted by meteorological
conditions and would wade through a puddle to get to the bookies
stand to place their bet. Men in expensive suits and the ladys in the latest fashions would stand in the lashing rain while calmly attempting
to separate the soaked pages of their race card, while others would
be seen (the men that is) walking through the puddle-drenced walk-ways
all atired in an expensive suit with plastic bags tied around their
ankles to keep their feet dry. Such is the fun and craic that weather
is further from the race-goers mind.
The weather this year was fantastic which brought the ladies out
in all the style and fashion of Milan and Paris.
The scenes can be mesmerising, with full pints of quality beers,
cream collared pint glasses of Guinness, and flutes of champagne,
the sound of galvanic laughter, the politiicans relaxing and exchanging
wise-cracks with the electorate, handing out the usual bone-welding
handshakes and lip smacking kisses.
The queues of race-goers all in great form queueing up for their
smoked salmon, baked potatoes or hamburgers, the Smells of freshly
mowed grass, leather bridles and saddles and the wee man studying his race card
with the pipe tobacco
aroma coming from his lip will commingle with the aromas of brandy
and fine wines.
The Irish dancers will be on stage jigging to the strains of the
banjo, accordian, flutes and fiddles while the news presenter would
be interviewing the winning jockey who smiles like the proverbial
cheshire cat on winning one of the most celebrated races of the
week, while the bookmakers look on at the jockey who is the cause
of their empty pockets, as they shrug their large shoulders and
wipe the chalk of their betting boards and begin the next race with
renewed hope of fleecing the punters, while the queues of winning
punters is enough to strike panic into the most phlegmatic bookmaker.
Although the bookies worst nightmare would be to see payout queues
extending telescopically into the sunset, he usually has the miraculous
amount of funds to meet demand. A day at the races in Galway, oh
yeah, be there, and no where else.
